A Special Nite In The Historic “Bohemian Caverns”
(Washington, DC) – Washington, DC is teeming with a rich history of culture and music and there still exist those venues that brought that magic to life. In 1962 Ramsey Lewis recorded “The Ramsey Lewis Trio at the Bohemian Caverns” and later won a Grammy for his recording “The In Crowd” recorded on the LP “The In Crowd, Live at the Bohemian Caverns.” The Cave’s reputation was further built by immortals like Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Shirley Horn, John Coltrane, Wynton Marsalis, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus and even Bill Cosby. In recent months and under new ownership, it has expanded it’s music showcase to include the full diversity of the African Diaspora which has greatly influenced our lives.
Tomorrow evening, Monday, July 24th, “The Cave” will feature Bambu Station Roots Band from St. Croix, Virgin Islands and Fasimbas Deep Roots Sound in what will be a collaboration of intense positive energy. Prior to their departure on their 4 country European Tour on August 2nd, the Virgin Island’s own Bambu Station will highlight the evening’s activities showcasing songs from their new album “Break The Soil” which will be released on July 28, 2006 on Mt. Nebo Records. Recently headlining the Washington Post’s “Summer Concert Series Reggae Night,” Bambu Station has been cited as one of the most “unbelievable” groups in music today due to their emotional, relative and gripping live performances. While their previous albums “Talkin’ Roots I“and “Talkin Roots II“ and “One Day“ have all garnered awards in the industry, the band continues their credible representation of the stinging issues still facing their people and communities. Many audiences, writers and fellow musicians alike gather to support and celebrate with this band, but Monday, July 24th will be extra special. Joining Bambu Station will be Fasimbas Deep Roots Sound currently based in Baltimore and spearheaded by DJ Ceska of Mali/Nigeria. One set of DJ Ceska’s selections will easily transform any listener to the dual-mind of a roots lover; revolutionary and meditative. DJ Ceska’s efforts to provide a positive environment through music also supplements his activism in fighting for and raising awareness about the medical needs on the African continent. DJ Ceska works with the African Diaspora Medical Project (http://www.admproject.org), a Project that not only raises awareness, but also offers viable solutions for persons to get involved. Further information will be available at the showcase. The show starts at 9pm sharp and will be spirited. If the past is any indication, The Cave’s reputation is about to grow. Monday, July 24th Other Bambu Station Dates: Mon., July 24th – Washington, DC @ Bohemian Cavern Sat., Jul 29th – Rise Up Vermont Roots Festival @ Bundy Center, Warren, VT (feat. Lion’s Den Adversity Gets “A” Rating From Jahworks.Org
(Washington, DC) – On June 1, 2006, freelance writer and reggae music critic, Ted Boothroyd of New Brunswick, Canada, gave Mt. Nebo Records recording artist, Black Culture rave reviews for his debut album “Lion’s Den Adversity.”
In his monthly column for http://www.jahworks.org (a leading Web site dedicated to Caribbean culture), Boothroyd had only compliments to bestow on Black Culture and stated “Black Culture is not a group, but a guy. And not just any guy, but this generation’s Ijahman Levi. If you know Ijahman, that may sound like extravagant praise, but just listen to “Haile I Selassie I.” (In fact you have, if you’ve heard last year’s Bambu Station compilation, Talkin’ Roots II.) What you hear on that track reflects exactly what you will find throughout this disc: thoughtful, beautiful singing and chanting over a patient, steady one-drop. You’ll also find subtle, pretty melodies and impeccable arrangements. This is gorgeous reggae, attractively packaged for good measure.” The “A” rating and accolades that Black Culture received are further reinforced by other comments made by Mr. Boothroyd, who indicated that Black Culture’s music is more impressive when you read about some of the adversities he faced. Boothroyd made reference to Black Culture’s background, influences, and collaboration with the VI’s Bambu Station – “His early exposure to soul music gave way to the beats and the vibes of Rap music and Hip Hop culture through which he became adept at the lyricism and floetry of the genre. But in a non-standard twist, he then adopted the Rastafarian outlook and lifestyle, tuned into roots reggae, and even founded a cultural gathering place to promote ‘communal livity.’ Apparently he was awaiting trial for an unidentified Babylon offence when he joined with the talented Bambu Station crew and recorded all these songs over a period of a single, intense week. It’s a remarkable setting for all the creativity and beauty that shines forth in the music.” Boothroyd went on to say - “Given the artist’s insistence on stability and reason and responsible behavior, you might expect something akin to wimpiness in the music itself. Nope. Not wimpy. There’s muscle here, and variety. It’s by turns luxurious, spare, dynamic, atmospheric, bubbly, pensive, friendly, challenging. ‘Never underrate a good cup a cocoa,’ Black Culture advises in one of his songs. Never underestimate a good, warm and nourishing reggae album either, I would advise. This is one.” The entire review can be found at http://www.jahworks.org/v2/musicreviewsdetail.asp?ID=22. “Lion’s Den Adversity” was produced by Bambu Station and is distributed by Mt. Nebo Records. Cess Silvera Selects Two Ky-Enie Songs For The ‘Shottas’ Soundtrack
The summer is heating up for Big Yard recording artist Ky-Enie. Last week the singer/songwriter had not one, but two, previously unreleased songs added to the soundtrack of Jamaica’s number one underground indie film, Shottas. Scheduled to hit the big screen in nationwide release on September 15th, Shottas’ writer, director, and producer Cess Silvera promises a reworked film that boasts a hot new soundtrack. And now we can add Ky-Enie’s “Ups and Downs” and “Rain” to the musical mix-up that will punctuate the dramas of Jamaican Top Shottas; Biggy, Wayne, and Mad Max. About the opportunity to work on this project Ky-Enie had this to say, “I met Cess years ago in a recording studio through another artist and from then I always hoped we’d work together someday, and today is that day.”
Ky-Enie, is known in the industry for his strong musical arrangements and thoughtful lyrics, as well as his explosive stage presence. Last year he held two spots the Top Ten Reggae chart in the U.S. Virgin Islands for eight weeks with songs “Wings of an Angel” and “Don’t Wanna Be Alone”. And he is currently blazing the radio stations in Jamaica with “Old Time Tradition”, a song that was recently re-recorded on Big Yard’s Vintage riddim. In an interview from his home in Jamaica Ky-Enie reflects on the song “Rain”, “When I wrote that song about six years ago it was reflecting my hope for a universal cleansing of the racism and gun violence that was really taking over Jamaica. I wished for a peaceful Jamaica and world.” Cess Silvera said of Ky-Enie’s music, “The songs moved me. The minute I heard them I knew exactly where they fit into the picture.” Mr. Silvera had already determined that he wanted to use this project to expose the Reggae talent that doesn’t get as much shine as the usual a-listers. As for his selection process with the soundtrack he says, “I just move on a vibes thing, when I feel it, I feel it.” Press Contact: Odette Flemming |
